Case - Corsair Graphite 600T (Silver)
Power Supply - Corsair HX750
Motherboard - MSI 990FXA-GD65V2
CPU - AMD FX 8320 3.5GHz
CPU Cooler - Arctic Cooling A30
RAM - Mushkin 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 9-9-9-24 Stealth
GPU - ASUS R9 270
SSD - ADATA XPG SX900 512GB

Plus a 32" Samsung TV that I'm using as a monitor.

Everything else is fairly generic.

Coming up soon: An additional 16GB RAM, one more GPU for Crossfire and another SSD for RAID0. (Despite what various websites say, my experience is that putting SSDs in a RAID really does making one's system go much, much faster.)

Ah, the ol' computer...
CPU: Intel 2600k @ 4.5ghz
GPU: Gigabyte R9 290, overclocked like crazy
MOBO: Asus Z68 Pro
RAM: 8gb 1600mhz Ripjaws X
PSU: Corsair HX850W
Storage: WD Caviar Black 1TB + a bunch of other, crappier, drives
Bootdisk: Samsung Evo 840 250gb
Case: Corsair Obsidian 800D (it's massive)

All that cooled by custom-loop water cooling. Gotta keep dem temps down in summer when my room is like 35C for weeks on end (have no aircon).

What's the best value gaming/desktop setup you all recommend? And I don't want a monstrous grey or beige box. Or a pile of wires like an Italian has vomited behind my desk.

There are a lot of ways to go about building a rig, it primarily depends upon what you intend on doing with it and what sort of budget you have. Different advice for different situations.

I want it to run high end MMOGs basically. They chew up RAM usage and my laptop just can't cope. Will a mac do it?

A high end Mac would do it but it's not worth buying a Mac unless you are playing Mac-only games or you prefer their OS and don't care about Windows only games. If you have the sort of budget to buy a high end iMac (£1500) you will be better off with a much cheaper Windows PC. Got a ballpark figure of how much you'd want to spend?

I could be tempted, that's the problem. My preference is to pay nothing. The reality is if I see something super tricked out I will pay decent money. But not iMac money.

As with everything from Apple, you pay for the looks. iMac looks slick, but you can get a more powerful PC for less than half the price.

Don't get a Mac. Get a higher-end AMD processor, a decent video card and load up on RAM. You'll notice that's what several of us have done.
